MASDAR: A DREAM ECO-CITY OR A FUTURISTIC DYSTOPIA?

INTRODUCTORY EXCERPT

What happens when a spaceship in the desert confronts issues of climate change and energy scarcity, oscillating between the future and the present? Masdar City provides an insightful perspective on sustainable development while acting as a pioneer for what concerns clean technologies. In fact, when the scheme was established in 2006, its goals were to support the development, commercialisation and adoption of renewable energy and clean tech technologies and systems, both locally and internationally.

This case study aims to critically analyse the Masdar city scheme: considering the actors involved, the transformation of the land as well as several models of development. The PESTEL factors shaping the development process will also be discussed, along with the inputs and outputs and positive and negative impacts of the scheme.
